### Summary
The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (MSA) position serves in Non VA Care (Community Care) or Clinical Practice Management Service. The MSA works collaboratively with other members of expanded health care teams (i.e. PACT, specialty care) including Non VA Care providers, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, behavioral health staff, etc to provide a robust interdisciplinary approach to care. Important interfaces and collaborations also occur with larger health care system providers including VA and non-VA specialists, hospitals, diagnostic and treating facilities and community based programs.
**Work Schedule:** Monday-Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, may include extended hours tour

### Responsibilities
Works collaboratively in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model and performs receptions duties, customer service and other duties assigned for the proper and timely treatment of patients.
Maintains appointment schedule for all Non VA Care.
Communicates with Non VA Care providers to ensure they accept VA patients and payments.
Prepares any required pre-appointment documents, schedule the appropriate level of care and documents the schedule in the appropriate consult.
Obtains medical documentation from Non VA providers, scans to appropriate consult within CPRS and view alerts the VA providers for continuity of care.
Coordinates internal and external care between customers and providers.
Supports patient safety standards using the correct Veterans Affairs identification of all patients through the use of two forms of identification, name and full Social Security Number.
He/She must use each interaction with the patient to validate and update patient demographic information, either in person during check-in or over the phone, to decrease the incidence of returned mail due to incorrect addresses and inability to contact patient by phone due to incorrect number.
Schedules appointments, manages, reviews, and dispositions consults, recalls, encounter action required reports, return to clinic orders, electronic wait list, secure messaging, etc. daily in accordance with VHA scheduling directives and policy.
Maintains effective and effective communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, other agencies, outpatient and inpatient clinics and participates in team huddles to manage and plan patient care; setting priorities and deadlines, performing administrative follow up action, and adjusting the flow and sequencing of the work to meet team and patient needs.
Assists patients, clinical team, and visitors in person or telephonically; coordinates and schedules appointments for patients with other specialties, outpatient and inpatient clinics as indicated.
Explains the VA's mandate to collect insurance information to veterans, their families, and other eligible patients.
He/She collects, scans, and updates health insurance information serving a major role in the revenue process.
Contributes to the revenue collection process by identifying patients with third party insurance.
Promotes veteran registration for and utilization of My HealthVet (MHV)

### Qualifications
**Basic Requirements**:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
**Experience:** Six months of clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform Medical Support Assistant (MSA) work;
OR
**Education:** One year above high school;
OR
**Experience/Education Combination:** Equivalent combination of experience and education. An example would be one year of clerical or office experience and six months of education above high school.
**Part-Time Experience:** Part-time experience as a MSA is creditable according to its relationship to the full-time work week. For example, a MSA employed 20 hours a week, or on a 1/2-time basis, would receive 1 full-time work week of credit for each 2 weeks of service.
**Quality of Experience:** Experience is only creditable if it is either directly related to the position to be filled or in a related field. Qualifying experience must also be at a level comparable to Medical Support Assistant experience at the next lower grade level (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level).
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level
**GS-06 Advanced MSA**
**Experience:** One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the federal service.
**Grade Determinations:** In addition to the basic requirements of the position, the applicant is required to meet the grade determination requirements at the GS-05 grade level for this position.
**Qualifying Experience**: One (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-05 level). **Examples of qualifying experience include:** Experience in an office or medical environment performing clerical duties, collaborating in an interdisciplinary coordinated care delivery model (i.e., patient aligned care team, or other specialty care setting where the patient aligned care team model is used such as oncology, HIV, SCI, Military Sexual Trauma, etc.). The Advanced MSA coordinates with the patient care team to review the clinic utilization by using various reports (e.g., Clinic Utilization Statistical Summary), ensure that the clinic setup is closely monitored to effectively support the needs of the clinic, and make any necessary adjustments. They develop/maintain effective and efficient communication with the patient, interdisciplinary team, VA medical centers, and other agencies (e.g., assist with communications during the inpatient to outpatient discharge; communicate with non-VA medical facilities; facilitate/process secure messaging with the patient and team; notify patients of normal lab results; develop and manage a tracking system for follow up care such as consults, tests, etc.).
**Preferred Experience:** Preferred candidate ability to type 40 words per minute.
